James Marks Academy

James Marks Academy Vacancies (Welwyn Garden City)

Caretaker

Caretaker Application Pack

Pay: H4 (potentially higher dependent on experience)

Hours: 37 hours / 52 weeks a year

Start Date: As soon as possible

The James Marks Academy operates in its brand new home in Welwyn. The school has state of the art facilities and supports pupils with high anxiety, communications and poor self-esteem/mental health which has often led to school refusal. The school currently supports 65 pupils; this will rise to 72 when full in 2027.

The building is relatively new, so whilst the maintenance side of the caretaker role is initially more limited, we do need someone who is adaptable and able to understand the electronic systems that enable the building to function. Support and training on the systems will be provided by our Trusts’ site manager who operates out of sister school, Roman Fields, but will attend the James Marks Academy once a week for the foreseeable future. He will ensure the successful candidate is confident in all aspects of the role, before he reverts back to his existing role.

We are looking to recruit an experienced tradesman/groundsman to support our Site Manager. The post will be primarily based in Welwyn, but it is expected that the Site Manager and Caretaker are able to cover each other’s annual leave, so some working across sites will be required when needed.  Mileage and travelling time will be paid on these occasions.

The candidate must be enthusiastic, flexible, self-motivated, efficient, able to work on their own initiative, work to deadlines and remain calm under pressure.  Clear knowledge of Health and Safety will be advantageous as is the ability to keep clear premises records.

Please review the Caretaker duties and responsibilities, as well as the person specification in this application pack.  Please note that all applicants must complete an application form as lone CVs will not be accepted.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and expect all staff and volunteers to share in this obligation. The successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced disclosure by the DBS.

An application pack and further details are available from our HR central team: 01442 256915 or email HR@jmatherts.co.uk, or alternatively please see the vacancy section on our websites where the application pack can be downloaded.

Closing date for applications is close of business on 17th October 2025. Candidates are welcome to call and speak to Scott Martin (Head Teacher) and/or arrange to visit the school site. Please contact the school office on 01707 830950 to make the necessary arrangements.

Assistant Head Teacher

Assistant Headteacher for the JMA in Welwyn.

Pay: L9 – L13 (£64,500 - £71,030)
Start Date: January 2026 dependent on availability.

Assistant Headteacher at the James Marks Academy in Welwyn Garden City

A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen to join the James Marks Academy Trust as an Assistant Head.  We are looking for an outstanding leader, with passion and vision for inclusive education. The successful individual will have a key role in ensuring high standards are maintained at the JMA so they are in line with the other successful provisions within the Trust.

As the latest school to join our Trust, the JMA is still expanding. The school is housed in a new state of the art building designed with its intended cohort in mind, in Welwyn. You will support the direction and vision for the Trust from the outset, working collaboratively with other leaders.

The JMAT was established on 1 April, 2021. The founding school in the MAT is Roman Fields which is Ofsted ‘outstanding’ in all areas and holds ‘Advanced’ status from the National Autistic Society. The addition of the James Marks Academy is seeking to replicate, in HCC’s words, ‘the outstanding work Roman Fields has done in the West of the county, in the East’. You may be required to work across the Trust on occasion but this role is based mainly in Welwyn. Both schools meet the needs of learners that have EHCP and diverse needs, who have high anxiety and, prior to entry, refused to attend school. The task therefore is to create a culture that re-ignites a love of learning, sense of worth and confidence, so that the pupils are supported to become successful, economically active, happy adults. A real commitment to providing all children with the opportunity to access excellent educational and wider opportunities is therefore a key facet of the role. The James Marks Academy Trust endeavours to develop this passion for learning in pupils, through encouraging enquiring minds and resilience, so that prior barriers which stem from these vulnerable pupils’ mental health are eradicated.

An application pack and further details are available from Ms. Mandy Crow, CFO: 01442 256915 or email mandy.crow@jmatherts.co.uk, or alternatively on our website www.jamesmarks.co.uk, where the application pack can be downloaded.

Closing date for applications is close of business on Monday 6 October 2025 at 12pm. Candidates are welcome to call and speak to the Head teacher and/or arrange to visit the school site. Please use contact details above to make arrangements.
